Description:

This course is designed to assist the officer in the development of maritime accident investigative skills. Through lecture, discussion, and scenario based training, the officer will learn and apply techniques which will assist in their ability to reconstruct accidents and prepare cases for court presentation. Further, students will learn to plan and execute an effective response to boating accident investigations. Advanced preparation regarding specific equipment and material required for marine accident investigations and their use, assistance resource identification, and establishing control of the accident site will be covered.

Terminal Performance Objective:

Given a scenario, the student will demonstrate the skills necessary to respond to, investigate, and make ready for court presentation, a boating accident with fatality, according to the principles and techniques covered in this course of instruction.

Interim Performance Objectives:
1. Identify the required planning for proper response to a boating accident investigation, scene management, and asset coordination.
2. Demonstrate investigative techniques to reconstruct a maritime accident.
3. Demonstrate the ability to prepare and make ready for court presentation, a maritime accident involving boating under the influence with fatality.

Method of Evaluation:
1. Demonstrate proficiency during laboratory and field excursus.
